Kyrre Mogster

4 - 28 September 2025

The story

Boyhood memories gazing at the fibers of his grandfather's fishing nets, the myriad wood grain of the Nøst in which his grandfather sat repairing these nets. The scales of the fish that he brought home. Subjects that appear in his work are personal and describe a visual allegory of life experience, processing grief, arriving on the other side of it. Accepting the inevitability of our journey, a kind of transcendence.

Mogster's research trips to visit art are a vital part of his process. He blends stimuli from art watching and memories in his studio. A boy uprooted from a monocultural life who grew up to embrace the thriving global village and the art mecca that is New York. From the cave paintings of Altamira in Cantabria Spain, to the masters hanging in the Metropolitan Museum. He hunts out then visually scratches the surface of the art he admires, to understand it deeply. He sits between a time of self-sufficiency in rural Norway and the extremities of abundance that he was faced with when he moved to the USA.

Work

From an early age, Kyrre Mogster has been interested in the details and patterns in nature and everyday life. Born in Stord, Norway in 1985, he lived within a community of fisherfolk until age 7, when he moved with his family to Seattle, USA. His point of departure might be a remote fjord in Norway, but his work glides throughout art history, onboarding the nuance of landscape, family and society. Then lands with a vitality and confidence that can only be achieved by coming home after a long and arduous journey.

Recent shows

Tøn exists for art that stays open — work that questions more than it concludes. We look for contemporary artists who are honest about the search, not just the result. We're always open to those we haven't met yet.
